How to adopt a dog

How to adopt a dog

Lucky the adopted dog

Lucky the adopted dog

For a few years now I have been adopting old Golden retrievers. It seems to work out very well for everybody involved.

When I decided to get a dog a few years ago I first thought about a puppy. I thought about a puppy because that is pretty much the way I’d seen it done. I was raised with Golden Retrievers so I’m very fond of the breed. I did an Internet search looking for local breeders and stumbled across the EGRR website. EGRR is Evergreen Golden Retriever Rescue.

I had adopted a dog through the Humane Society before. She was a really sweet little border collie who was afraid of kids. We didn’t realize how bad it was until my son walked into the room carrying a baseball bat over his shoulder. The dog saw him with the bat, yipped once and hid behind me. Apparently she had been badly abused by children of her previous owner. The vet helped me find a really nice young couple with a fenced yard in about a year later I got a picture of the sweet little dog with her new owners at the beach.

Anyway, I thought I wanted a puppy so that I could raise it properly.

The Evergreen Golden Retriever Rescue people provide a service by which they take Golden Retrievers that no one wants and match them with new owners. As part of the process they have the dogs taken to the vet and thoroughly examined. The dogs also spend at least 30 days in a foster house to see how they do in a real home with a real family.

The first dog I rescued had been kept chained up in a backyard all the time. He did not know about riding in a car, about treats, about squeaky toys or any other essential dog activities. He was extremely good with the grandchildren. At Christmas he would be lying in the middle of the floor with children tripping over him and it didn’t seem to bother him a bit.

The current Golden retriever, my second, is equally as good with children. At Christmas this year my grandson Max was playing some game with the dog involving a stick. When Max and the dog stand up they are about eye to eye in height. Yet no one was at all worried about Max getting hurt.

There are real, definite benefits to adopting an older dog. They are potty trained which is a big plus. My dogs have always chewed but they know which toys are theirs. They only chew their toys. They know some commands and learn others readily. They also adopt readily to a new name if you want to change their name.

So my advice on adopting a dog is to pick up breed you like and find a local rescue society online. It has worked out very well for me and I think it is at least worth considering.

Comparing Wiha, Bondus and Free Precision Screwdriver Sets,

Posted on Friday, January 21st, 2011 at 7:16 pm.

Screwdriver Set Free Offer

We are offering a great little, free screwdriver set when you sign up to get our newsletter. It has six separate screwdrivers.  They are easy to use.   You can put your index finger on the end which rotates and then turn the screwdriver with your thumb and middle finger. This grip is a lot more secure a lot easier to use than turning the whole screwdriver on something this small.

I mostly use mine to tighten the screws on eyeglasses or to open the battery compartments on kids’ toys. This is a really nice quality set.  In all honesty it is not at the same quality level as the more expensive Wiha and Bondhus screwdriver sets we sell but then this is a lot less money.

If you don’t have something like this around the house you really should get one. I keep mine in the bathroom drawer to repair my eyeglasses. I checked with the customer service reps and it seems they generally keep this kind of thing in the junk drawer in the kitchen. But they do want you to know that their junk drawer is really not full of junk but is mostly important odds and ends.

Meet the Staff at Carbide Processors!

Posted on Friday, January 7th, 2011 at 6:18 pm.

We recently added a Meet the Staff page on our website under Company Info.  We wanted our customers to become familiar with those on the inside of Carbide Processors!

As someone who avidly shops online for most things, I often forget that there are actual people who work on the inside of a website.  I know it sounds silly, clearly websites can’t update themselves (although sometimes, thanks to technological glitches, things can magically disappear and then reappear again) and someone has to fulfill orders and ship products.  What I am saying is, when you go out to a store, you have somewhat of an idea of who works for the company and it can be a more personal experience.  However, when you have an ecommerce store,  you can lose that personalization and it becomes easy to forget just what goes on in the inside of a website and therefore, we decided to create a page to our website so that all of you can meet our dedicated staff.

We are a small business, with seven and a half employees (four of which work on our website daily) and a very friendly and loving dog named Lucky who is always looking for someone to play with.  We are a fun group of people that enjoy laughing, hard work and dedication.

Every one of us is dedicated to providing our customers with quality customer care and the ultimate customer  experience!

Price Difference Between Carbide And Steel Wear Parts

Posted on Friday, January 7th, 2011 at 4:48 pm.

Much of the price difference is an issue of materials. Tungsten carbide is primarily tungsten with a few percent cobalt. Any steel has a really high percentage of iron. Iron is much, much cheaper than tungsten or cobalt.

Steel, even high speed and tool steel, is made in huge quantities. By comparison tungsten carbide is made in relatively small quantities. As an example, a ton of steel is very little steel whereas a ton of tungsten carbide is a huge amount of tungsten carbide.

You can machine tungsten carbide once it’s been sintered and fully hardened but it takes a long time and requires the use of diamond tooling.

When tungsten carbide is formed, and before it is fully sintered and hardened, it is softer than sidewalk chalk and you can whittle it into shape.  However tungsten carbide shrinks during the final sintering so you have to whittle the pre-sintered part into something oversize. You want to leave yourself a little fudge room which means it will require some machining after it is sintered and fully hardened.

So tungsten carbide is much more expensive than steel because the materials are much more expensive, because it is not made in anywhere near the volume steel is and because it is much harder to make.
