Different Kinds of Saw Blades

Posted on Tuesday, November 30th, 2010 at 5:02 pm.

Think of saw blades like knives.  You can do everything with a Swiss army knife.  However a machete makes cutting brush easier.  A chef knife, boning knife and paring knife make cooking easier. And so on.

A combination saw blade is like a Swiss army knife.  If you are serious about the quality of your cuts you will be much happier with a specific blade.  A rip blade is faster, for example.  A plywood blade will typically give cleaner cuts and so on.

A combination blade may have an ATB (alternate top bevel) grind.  You may get a cleaner cut with an ATBR (added Raker), a High ATB, or an ATAF (Alternate Top, Alternate Face).

There are maybe two dozen classes of saw blades divided by type of machine, material being cut and other application specific functions.  There are maybe ten types of saw tip grinds.  There are maybe a eight or ten types of carbide and advanced material tips (Cermet 2 and Super C for example) used.  That is over a thousand kinds of blades

We sell Tenryu saw blades and here are their major classes:

Tenryu  Alumi-Cut (Non-ferrous) saw blades, Tenryu Brushcutter Saw Blades, Tenryu Cord Free Saw Blades, Tenryu Diamond Grit Saw Blades, Tenryu Fiber-Cement Board Saw Blades, Tenryu Gold Medal All Purpose Saw Blades, Tenryu Gold Medal Dado Set Saw Blades, Tenryu Industrial Saw Blades Saw Blades, Tenryu Melamine And Veneer Plywood Saw Blades,

Tenryu Miter And Sliding Miter Saw Blades, Tenryu Non-Ferrous Saw Blades,

Tenryu Panel Saw Blades Saw Blades, Tenryu Plastic Saw Blades, Tenryu Plunge Cutting Saw Blades, Tenryu Power Tool Series Saw Blades, Tenryu Pro Series – Non-Ferrous Saw Blades, Tenryu Pro Series – Plastic Cutting Saw Blades, Tenryu Pro Series – Solid Surface Saw Blades, Tenryu Pro Series – Wood Saw Blades, Tenryu Rapid Cut Saw Blades, Tenryu Rescue Blades Saw Blades, Tenryu Silencer & Ultra Trim Silencer Saw Blades, Tenryu Sliding Table And Vertical Panel Saw Blades, Tenryu Steel Cutting Saw Blades and Tenryu Stainless Steel Cutting Saw Blades.

There is an article on kinds of saw blades at: http://www.carbideprocessors.com/pages/Saw-Blades.html

Saw blade Steel

Posted on Tuesday, November 30th, 2010 at 4:31 pm.

Steel in Tenryu Saw Blades

One of the many things that makes Tenryu blades exceptional is the quality of the steel saw body and the way it is heat treated.

We had a question from a customer who dropped his Tenryu saw blade and wanted to know if it was ruined.  Cheaper blades would be ruined because of poor quality steel.  Tenryu uses excellent steel so the blade is easily repairable.

Here are my instructions.

First, I would put a straight edge on the blade and see if the shoulders are bent where the tips came off.

The best way to do this is in a darkened room with a pretty weak light source on the other side of the saw blade.  You put your straight edge on the saw blade and look for light coming under it.  http://www.carbideprocessors.com/pages/Hammering-Saw-Blades.html

If the saw blade is not bent then try cutting with it.  Even with two teeth missing the cut may be good enough.

If the cut is not good enough, any good saw shop will be able to replace the tips, check the flatness, set the tension and give you back a high quality saw blade.

This is true for any of the Tenryu saw blades including the; Tenryu  Alumi-Cut (Non-ferrous) saw blades, Tenryu Brushcutter Saw Blades, Tenryu Cord Free Saw Blades, Tenryu Diamond Grit Saw Blades, Tenryu Fiber-Cement Board Saw Blades, Tenryu Gold Medal All Purpose Saw Blades, Tenryu Gold Medal Dado Set Saw Blades, Tenryu Industrial Saw Blades Saw Blades, Tenryu Melamine And Veneer Plywood Saw Blades, Tenryu Miter And Sliding Miter Saw Blades, Tenryu Non-Ferrous Saw Blades, Tenryu Panel Saw Blades Saw Blades, Tenryu Plastic Saw Blades, Tenryu Plunge Cutting Saw Blades, Tenryu Power Tool Series Saw Blades, Tenryu Pro Series – Non-Ferrous Saw Blades, Tenryu Pro Series – Plastic Cutting Saw Blades, Tenryu Pro Series – Solid Surface Saw Blades, Tenryu Pro Series – Wood Saw Blades, Tenryu Rapid Cut Saw Blades, Tenryu Rescue Blades Saw Blades, Tenryu Silencer & Ultra Trim Silencer Saw Blades, Tenryu Sliding Table And Vertical Panel Saw Blades, Tenryu Steel Cutting Saw Blades and Tenryu Stainless Steel Cutting Saw Blades.

The tool chest featured on the left made its debut on the back cover of Fine Woodworking magazine in the July 1988 issue.  This is the tool chest of carpenter and stonemason, H.O Studley and is from the 19th century, making this one of the most exquisite tool chests in history.

Henry Studley, a piano maker from Massachusetts, built this famous and intricate tool chest over a 30 year period while he was working at the Poole Piano Company. Studley used ebony, mother-of-pearl, ivory, rosewood, and mahogany to make his masterpiece that would still be famous, 80 years after his death.

In this tool chest, every tool has its own place, as Studley designed a holder to keep it their as well as to showcase each individual tool.  Small clasps can rotate out of the way so that other tools can be moved. The chest hangs securely to a wall and opens and closes like a book.  When it is closed, tools on the right side nestle closely to tools on the left side and despite seeming “packed to the brim” everything is still easy to get to.

Tom, President of Carbide Processors, believes in quality and craftsmanship, much like this beautiful tool chest.  It is pieces of craftsmanship and woodwork, like this tool chest, that makes the staff at Carbide Processors so appreciative of quality and grateful we can supply tools to other woodworkers and craftsman.

Cleaning Saw Blades, Router Bits and Carbide Tools

Posted on Wednesday, November 17th, 2010 at 6:02 pm.

Tungsten Carbide is made to be wear and corrosion resistant.  It really is very hard to damage it at all.  I have never seen any proof that any cleaner damaged carbide.  It can affect the surface but that is extremely difficult.  Even when it does affect the surface it is only the very top.

When you wash your hands you remove skin cells, mostly dead skin cells.  Whether bathing damages your skin is your decision.  However the level of damage is about the same in either case.

I have been researching carbide applications and developing advanced grades for 30 years.  My approach has been using chemical processes to affect the surface of tungsten carbide and similar materials for brazing.  Making new grades of high wear carbide is hard;  Making new grades of high wear carbide that will stay on the saw through brazing is even harder.

Chemical attack can be a huge wear factor in carbide in both wood and metal so it is heavily researched.

Probably the use that is hardest on tungsten carbide is cutting green Western Red Cedar in a sawmill.  Western Red Cedar is a very high acid wood.  Yet a carbide tipped blade with a modern grade of carbide can cut constantly for eight hours before it dulls enough to need sharpening.

We did some work on this a couple years ago and the results are at:
