How We Keep Promises

How We Keep Promises

Whiteside Double Roundover router bit

Whiteside Double Roundover router bit

This is a picture of the Whiteside double roundover router bit set with adjustable cutting length.

It is a cool router bit and very handy. It saves a lot of money over buying different double roundover router bits in different sizes. It makes cutting double roundovers a lot easier, faster, with more certain results than cutting each side separately. If you are good you can cut each site separately and get beautiful results but this still makes it easier and faster.

Anyway we had it listed on our website and, unfortunately, we showed the whole unit but the price was for just one cutter.  We got a call from a customer who asked if our price was right.  We checked, told him that the price was wrong but he could have it anyway. Then we corrected the price on our website.

My dad was a big believer in keeping your promises. He didn’t cut me any slack when I made a mistake and made a promise I should not have.

50 years later I am still using that philosophy in the business.  If we make a mistake in price on our website, and it has happened more than once, we will honor that price.

We have put up 10 packs of hex keys (L keys, Hex wrenches, L wrenches, Allen wrenches) but priced them based on the price for a single hex key so we sold better than $200 worth of hex keys from little over $20.  We have dropped decimal points, gotten prices switched on products and made other mistakes. In each and every case we have had a customer point it out to us and we have honored the lower price.

In all fairness to the IT people, I have to point out that they do an exceptionally good job. We have had very, very few mistakes considering we have over 12,000 products up.

So if you’re cruising our website and see a price that is way too low go ahead and order, we’ll make it good.  We do reserve the right to correct the price immediately, though.

Brazing Laser Cut Steel

Posted on Friday, January 28th, 2011 at 4:14 pm.

Brazing Laser Cut Steel

I had lunch with a customer who said he liked to pretin new saw plate.  He was of the opinion that if you try and braze brand-new saw plate the tips may or may not stay on. It is a long-held belief in the saw and tool industry that, with the new saw plate, you braze the tips on and then knock them off. Once you’ve done that you can braze the tips on again and you won’t have to worry about tip loss.

Whereas this is one way to do it, this method requires a lot of labor. What follows is an explanation of why this is done and how to avoid having to do it.

Saw bodies were originally stamped out in the old days before lasers. When saw bodies are stamped the metal on the tips of the shoulders tends to be deformed. But the chemistry of the steel was left unchanged.

In laser cutting a laser burns a series of pinholes in the steel. As the laser is burning and turning the steel molten, there is a jet of gas that blows the molten steel out. You can use any gas. Compressed air is commonly used. You can use an inert gas such as CO2 to prevent oxidation of the hot steel. However the steel is still very hot when the laser moves on to the next hole so that, even if you use CO2, the hot steel is still exposed to the air and there is still an oxidation issue.

The hot steel is very susceptible to reaction with the oxygen in the atmosphere. So the edges of laser cut saw bodies have a pretty good-sized oxide layer. In addition there can be considerable carbon migration in the hot steel. The issue of carbon migration and hot steel is widely discussed and little understood.

In any case, current best practice in the tool industry calls for removing about .005 to .007 inches of steel before brazing. This process is commonly called gumming. Tool manufacturers either do it in their own shop or have it done by the plate manufacturer.

When ordering plate, it is very important to either specify or, at least, find out if the plates will come with the notches ground.

An additional problem with brazing new saw plate is the protective anti – rust coating.  This protective coating is always something such as a grease, oil, plastic, synthetic or other carbon-based material. If this material is wiped into the notch it can cause brazing problems.

I was once called out on a consulting problem with a brazing issue.  The person doing the gumming wanted to do a really good job. When he was through grinding out the notch he would take a cloth, spray it with WD-40 and wiped the notches clean with the cloth. What he was doing was applying a film of WD-40 into the notch. When he just used a clean rag to wipe the notches out the problem disappeared.

The same thing can happen with the gumming wheel.  If the wheel grinds through the protective coating on the surface that it will become oil – laden and can contaminate the notch. This is not nearly as large a problem as poor handling.

Magnetic Screwdriver From Wiha

Posted on Wednesday, January 26th, 2011 at 12:08 am.

Magnetic Screwdriver From Wiha

The blue screwdriver in the picture has a magnetic tip. The magnet holds the insert in and also holds a screw in place when you’re trying to start the screw.

Wiha does a great job in all their tools but I think this one is particularly cool. It is a good, strong magnet with a couple pounds of pull. This means it will really hold the bit and the screw in place. However it is not so strong that it is hard to separate the two. They have also machined the magnetic collar so it is a wee bit oversized which makes it much, much easier to remove the bit.

Screwdrivers With Replaceable Bits

Posted on Tuesday, January 25th, 2011 at 8:28 pm.

Screwdrivers With Replaceable Bits

Insert bits, hex bit or replaceable bit screwdrivers.

The top picture is a screwdriver where the bit is part of the shaft. This is the traditional screwdriver. The top screwdriver is a Wiha insulated screwdriver and is color-coded as an insulated screwdriver with red and yellow. The middle screwdriver is a magnetic, insert bits screwdriver.

There are two principal reasons to buy insert bit screwdrivers. The first reason is convenience. It is a lot easier to carry around a variety of bits than it is a variety of screwdrivers. Especially if you buy one of our screwdrivers that has the bits hidden in the handle. The second reason to buy an insert bit screwdriver is that you can very readily replace the bits. The handle is the most expensive part of screwdriver and, yet, it is the bit that gets the most wear.  When a bit gets worn or rounded you simply remove and slip in an inexpensive replacement bit.

Hex Bits And Hex Keys

Posted on Tuesday, January 25th, 2011 at 8:02 pm.

Hex Bits And Hex Keys

Hex bits are also called bits hex, insert bits, screwdriver bits and hex keys Are also called  L wrenches or Allen wrenches.

That is a hex key in the red package in the top of the picture. It is also called an L wrench, Allen wrench or hex wrench. The pretty gold part in the bottom of the picture is a hex bit also called a bit hex, insert bit or screwdriver bit.

If you look at the picture above you can see why these are called hex. Both of them have a six sided shape. Hex bits are made to go in holders such as screwdrivers whether hand driven or power driven.  Hex keys are made to insert into a hex head screw and provide a lever for turning screw.

These are just a few names that came to me.  I am sure there are more names out there. If you know of any I would appreciate hearing about them.
