Woodworking Season. Hooray, Hooray!
I love the outdoors but there is sure a lot to be said for woodworking season. When it is cold and windy and wet outside it is awfully nice to be inside with the game on TV, a hobby you really like and maybe a pot roast cooking for dinner. Now that woodworking season is here it is time to get ready.
As I get older, and maybe smarter, I much more appreciate the value of having all my tools organized, sharp, in good condition and easy to find.
I have slowly been replacing my old, worn-out cheap, tools with newer and much better tools.
I am finally buying myself some of the things that I always thought were too expensive and I am finding that they are a real bargain.
My woodworking has always been along the lines of building shells, restoring houses, doing repairs for my house and other houses on a volunteer basis and similar. I am slowly edging towards fine woodworking.
I’ve seen a lot of videos of guys who are extremely good. In particular I remember a video of Sam Maloof free handing a piece of wood through a bandsaw. I don’t believe I’m ever going to be that good. I’m absolutely sure I’m not that good now.
There are some things I think you ought to consider upgrading before you start serious woodworking this season. A really good fence for your tablesaw will mean a great improvement in your work. It is just so much nicer when a cut comes out the way you want it. Also make sure you have good push sticks or similar.
It took me a long time to come to an appreciation of a router table. For years and years I was a guy who clamped the work down and freehanded the router. If you have never used a router table you really don’t know what you’re missing in terms of accuracy, efficiency and just overall pleasure. The Woodpeckers router tables we sell are beautiful and you can start small and work your way up.
Don’t forget the hand tools. It is a great shame when a beautiful piece of work is scratched because a hand tool slips.
